Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities of the ancient world: more than a hundred thousand people lived here at its height, and the Mexica who found it centuries after its fall named it Teōtihuácān, the place where the gods were made. Nobody knows what its own builders called it. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, it sits in a valley an hour northeast of Mexico City, and walking the Avenue of the Dead between the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon is the closest thing there is to standing inside a city that planned itself around the sky.
The axis the whole city was laid out along, more than two kilometres of it, with the platforms and compounds that lined it on either side.
The largest structure on the site and one of the largest in Mesoamerica, built over a cave that the city seems to have considered its origin.
At the northern end of the avenue, framed by the Cerro Gordo behind it — the alignment is deliberate and it is the clearest view of how the city read its landscape.
