We meet in front of the Museo de la Ciudad de México and ride the Metrobús out together, start among the produce aisles of La Merced, and cross into Sonora for the herbal and ritual trade. Your guide grew up in these corridors, so you eat where locals eat and hear the stories that never make it into a guidebook.
La Merced Market Tour: The Neighborhood Wakes Up
We begin in the lesser-known aisles of La Merced, tasting morning antojitos and café de olla as vendors set up around us. This is the working market, not the tourist one.
Sonora Market Tour: Magic & Tradition
We cross into Sonora Market to understand the syncretism of Mexican healing heritage: medicinal herbs, mystical remedies and pre-Hispanic traditions still practiced daily.
Sweet Finish at Pastelería Madrid
We take the Metro back into the centre and finish at Pastelería Madrid, a neighbourhood bakery that has been feeding this part of the city for generations, over coffee and a local pastry chosen by your guide.
La Merced is the second largest market in Mexico, surpassed only by the Central de Abasto. It covers several city blocks and has been the food heart of Mexico City since the 19th century. We walk a curated route through it, so you see the essential without getting lost.

Yes. The tour includes 8 tastings: traditional pozole, fresh fruit juices pressed on the spot, edible insects and market antojitos. All food is included in the price. We no longer serve alcohol on this tour, so it works for families and for anyone who does not drink.
One of the eight tastings is edible insects, chapulines or chinicuiles depending on the season. A note on allergies: edible insects contain tropomyosin, the protein associated with shellfish allergy, so tell us when booking if shellfish is a problem for you. We always carry alternatives, vegetarian or traditional, for anyone who would rather not try them.
