A historic downtown tour through the layers of Mexico City, from pre-Hispanic ruins to colonial palaces to the monuments of the Porfiriato. In three hours on foot you cross from Bellas Artes and the Palacio Postal down Madero to the Zócalo, with the Templo Mayor and the Metropolitan Cathedral facing each other across the main square. Your guide is a certified local historian, groups are capped at fifteen, and the tour ends on a private rooftop terrace above the plaza.
Bellas Artes & Postal Palace
We begin with the monumental architecture of the Porfiriato: the marble façade of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the gilded ironwork of the Palacio Postal, and the Palacio de Minería and MUNAL a block away. Along the way your guide tells you about the artists and visionaries who reshaped Mexico City around them.
Zócalo — The Main Square
We walk Madero, the pedestrian street that runs from the Alameda to the main square, past churches and colonial palaces stacked on top of Aztec foundations. We end at the Zócalo, where the ruins of the Templo Mayor sit beside the Metropolitan Cathedral, and go up to a private rooftop terrace for a view over the whole plaza.
Approximately 3 kilometers at a very relaxed pace, with frequent stops for explanations, photos, and rest. Suitable for all fitness levels.
